The Importance of a Shop Insurance Policy

August 28th, 2009

Insurance is important for any business for coverage against possible eventualities such as loss, damage and liability. For shop owners, business insurance provides protection that will allow them to maintain their business even in the face of such occurrences. Shop insurance benefits are tailored specifically to provide shop owners with peace of mind.

Sometimes entire families depend on the smooth running of a shop, which acts as a family business for both parents and adult children. The financial risks in running a shop are quite high. There is always the possibility of theft, vandalism, natural events like flood or fire, and simple accidents that occur as a part of running a business.

Shop insurance is designed to protect specifically against the types of threats shops would ordinarily face including malicious damage, loss, theft, natural disaster, burst pipes, fire and public liability. Good shop insurance will allow you to maintain your livelihood even in the face of such circumstances. You will receive money for shop repairs and new inventory. If you own your shop’s building, it should also be covered so that the insurance can help with the cost of rebuilding. A good shop insurance policy will also cover your lost earnings during the down time that occurs before your shop is back in business.

Note that shop insurance benefits can vary widely, so it is important to check all the terms and details before purchasing an insurance policy. Some items that can be considered as options for shop insurance policies include legal cover and accidental damage. Legal cover provides protection against public liability in case you are sued, for example, by a customer who is injured on your shop property. With legal coverage, you policy will pay for all or part of your expenses in defending against suits related to public liability. Accidental damage might seem like a natural part of shop insurance, but it is not always included in standard policies.

If you have employees at your shop, the law in the United Kingdom requires that you carry employer’s liability coverage. This will cover you against any damages, loss and legal costs for which the shop is liable in case an employee is injured or dies due to the negligence of the shop owner.

There are some other important types of coverage to look for when searching for a good shop insurance policy. Building and business contents cover protects your shop’s building, contents and inventory against loss. This will include all equipment, furniture, computers and other items found within the shop premises. Generally, contents and building cover will protect against risk such as theft, explosion, storm and vandalism. However, you check the fine print of the policy to make sure that it covers all risks related to your business. Also, there may be some items like outdoor signs that may not be included.

Finding the right shop insurance requires some shopping around. Ask for quotes and benefit details from a number of reputable companies and compare for the best deal

Courier Insurance Drivers Face Fuel Increases

July 6th, 2009

Small businesses are struggling to cope with the rising cost of fuel, with van drivers and couriers particularly affected.

The average price of petrol grew by almost 5p between May and June, which the AA has said is the second highest monthly increase on record.

The average cost of petrol currently stands at 102.66p per litre, compared to 97.68p per litre in May. Diesel has risen by 1.36p to 104.85p per litre.

Businesses are feeling the strain of such rises at a time when budgets around the country are already stretched. A previous survey by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) revealed that 79% of the members it interviewed thought the Government’s recent increase in fuel duty would negatively affect their business.

Angela Smith, Spokesperson for the Federation of Small Businesses, said:

“Any increase has a knock-on effect on all levels of supply chains whether it’s consumer or business-to-businesses. Small businesses struggle to compete with large businesses and this is due to the fuel price.”

The AA has said that the latest rises mean that refilling a typical 50-litre fuel tank would now cost an extra £2.49. This will come as a massive blow to van drivers and couriers as they look to limit their outgoings during the economic downturn.

Van drivers and couriers, as well as many other small businesses, will no doubt be looking to the Government to provide them with additional support as they try and cope with the latest set of fuel rises.

There are a number of steps van users and couriers can take to remain frugal during the economic downturn. For instance, more drivers are investing in Satellite Navigation technology to ensure that they get to unfamiliar target destinations much quicker and save fuel in the process.

Active Insurance is an independent broker offering different types of financial cover such as courier insurance and to help run your business smoothly without any concern or worry.

Professional Indemnity Insurance for Nurses

April 20th, 2009

Nurses may need individual PI Insurance

The Nursing Times has reported that new government proposals could mean that all nurses and midwives will need professional indemnity (PI) insurance in place before they can register to practise.

The magazine is warning that nurses and midwives may therefore eventually have to pay for the own insurance, as is the case with their doctor and consultant colleagues.

According to the report, a draft consultation document on the proposals has already been drawn up but publication has been delayed because of concerns raised by professional nursing bodies and trade union, Unison.

Stakeholders are fearful that the new proposals could lead to a shift in liability in clinical negligence cases, with the floodgates opened in terms of claims against individual nurses.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council has confirmed it is aware that in the long-term, the Department of Health wants all healthcare professionals to have professional indemnity insurance cover in place prior to registration.
